Philippe Starck’s Château les Carmes Haut-Brion

Sited on ten hectares in the heart of Bordeaux, the Château les Carmes Haut-Brion is unique both as an urban vineyard and for its striking new cellar facilities. The glistening blade-shaped building is the latest project by Philippe Starck, who worked with sometime collaborator Luc Arsène-Henry to design the new vat house, a barrel cellar and reception rooms.
Measuring 2,000 square meters across four levels, the cellar accommodates 300 barrels. Vats of various shapes — made from wood, stainless steel, or concrete to suit the different grape varieties and soil — also serve as canvases for invited artists, the first of whom is Ara Starck. A tasting room on the top floor overlooks the vat house, while a panoramic terrace affords views of the estate.
Of course, it is the remarkable bronze sheen of the seemingly extraterrestrial edifice that distinguishes it from not only as a cellar but as an architectural marvel.
