Sèvres: Unique Works by Fabrice Hyber

French national ceramics museum Sèvres – Cité de la Céramique will bring a selection of ceramic artists to Brussels Art Fair BRAFA. The Sèvres display at the fair consists of a selection of works from Johan Creten, Christian Astuguevieille, Jean Arp, Aldo Bakker, Stéphane Bureaux, Raphaël de Villers, Jean-Baptiste Fastrez, Naoto Fukasawa, Kristin McKirdy, Myriam Mechita, Nathalie Talec, Gabrielle Wambaugh, Maurice Pré and Asuka Tsuboï.

For the first time, Sèvres also showcases the latest unique pieces by French artist Fabrice Hyber. Known for his long career in international art scene, Hyber has now painted directly on exceptionally large vases created by Pierre Charpin in 2014. The artist tries out techniques and transparency inspired by watercolour, and paints as a ‘work in progress,’ in which the painting develops spontaneously. The geometrical forms of the 120-centimetre high Grand Vase Charpin are deliberately imperfect, and articulate as a net under the surface of the vase.

Hyber has collaborated with Sèvres since 2007, when he created the sculpture l’Homme de Bessine. In 2008 and 2013, the sculpture was followed by tree decors for a dinner service, and a monumental fresco entitles Sans Gêne for the Pasteur Institute. The large-scale installation consists of 800 plates painted at Sèvres.

Fabrice Hyber studied at the Beaux-Arts Nantes, France, and rose to success in the mid-1980’s. He was awarded with the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale for the French Pavilion in 1997. Since 2012, his works have been exhibited in museums and foundations such as Palais de Tokyo in Paris, museums of contemporary art Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence and MAC/VAL in Vitry-sur-Seine and art centre CRAC in Sète, France. •
