The Vanhaerents Art Collection is a family-based collection of contemporary art that provides a substantial overview of artistic movements in  1970s. This year,  Heartbreak Hotel – their first major exhibition outside Belgium – will take place at the Zuecca Project Space during the 56th Venice Biennale – running from 6 May through to 15 September 2015. In recognition of his significance as the collection’s founder and his 70th birthday, Walter Vanhaerents will curator the prestigious exhibition. Keeping in line with the collection’s original mandate, this theme-based presentation immediately draws its title from pop music history. Vanhaerents selected close to 15 sizable works that combine visual tension, a strong physical presence and conceptual rigor.

Joana Vasconcelos

Ugo Rondinone

Matthew Day Jackson – August 9, 1945 (2011)

Lucien Smith

Katharina Fritsch

Bruce Nauman

Structured as a dialogue between works by artists from different backgrounds and generations, Heartbreak Hotel explores notions of melancholy, physical suffering and martyrdom. The exhibition conjures up historical images of warfare and contemporary forms of religious practices, in contrast to an Arcadian realm of waving palm trees, amusing clown figures and leisure ladies in sophisticated, lush surroundings.

Heartbreak Hotel will take place from 6 May to 15 September 2015.
