As Beatrix Li-Chin Loos explains, Bauhaus has been present in her life since her childhood years in Germany. “I remember doing a Bauhaus-inspired collage art work in school, using simple forms and a large range of colours,” she recalls.

That her latest project is a set of objects titled Hommage au Bauhaus is, then, a return to her roots.

The Strasbourg-based designer has created a series of what she calls “miniature architectures” for the Art Shop of the Fondation Beyeler within the framework of a new Paul Klee exhibition. With the help of Alsatian woodworking companies, she turned scraps of elm wood, and recycled glass into a limited series of vases and candleholders. Using upcycled elements in her pieces, with non-polluting and non-toxic finishes, is the basis of Chut! Collections, her umbrella concept of decorative objects and small furniture made entirely from scraps of wood.

The challenge with these circle-and-square-based Hommage pieces, she explains, “was to find a balance between aesthetics and functionality. The more simple the shape is, the trickier it is to find good design.” To solve the problem, she returned to her experimental Bauhaus roots in her early years. “I played with wooden squares and discs, like a child who plays with building blocks and wants to build a house.”

The Hommage au Bauhaus pieces are now available at the Art Shop of the Fondation Beyeler
