Beloved by Tabanlıoğlu Architects
The Victoria & Albert Museum continued its tradition of must-see installations during this year’s London Design Festival. Among the many gems tucked in the labyrinthine museum, Tabanlıoğlu Architects presented “Beloved” at the bridge over the V&A’s Medieval & Renaissance galleries during the weeklong event in September. The Istanbul-based architecture practice created a special installation inspired by Sabahattin Ali’s 1943 novel Madonna in a Fur Coat.
At once abstract and concrete, Tabanlıoğlu Architects’ installation offered an unconventional physical interpretation of the classic love story, set in Ankara and Berlin. A 13-meter-long structure holds a multimedia experience in its tinted mirrored cladding, visible only in its seams. Thus, “Beloved” combines film and literature in a fragmented yet intimate experience.
