Glass-oriented designer Philipp Weber’s latest On Colours collection comes just as he is nominated for the Bavarian State Prize for Young Designers – an award dedicated to highlighting the importance of excellent design, good craftsmanship and qualified professional training to ensure the competitiveness of companies in Germany, particularly small and medium-sized businesses. The criteria for selection stipulates a high level of design quality and power of innovation as well as the consideration of society- and environment-related issues.

The 2012 Design Academy Eindhoven graduate always seeks to identify emotional qualities in the production process. Philipp Weber has a fascination for crafts and new perspectives on production. As the winner of the 2013 DMY New Talent Awards – he designed the 2014 trophy. His recently debuted On Colours a collection of vases that can be best understood as a study of light and color in the glass.

On Colours expandes upon the technical innovation first explored in A Strange Symphony – featuring a new trumpet-inspired glassblowing pipe which allowed Philipp Weber to conceive another way to shape the inner cavities of blown glass. By applying different colours to each chamber, these refractions create a chromatic mingle; at times, deceiving perception.

” ‘Where lies the significance of craftsmanship today?’, ‘What is the meaning of the human relation to a material and its processing?’ or ‘What remains of a craft?’ are questions that guide my approach. ” – Philipp Weber
