OBJECT and Art Rotterdam

The 18th Art Rotterdam runs from February 9 to 12, and alongside, OBJECT Rotterdam, runs from February 10 to 12.

Object Rotterdam will again fill the SS Rotterdam cruise ship with objects by over 75 well-known and upcoming designers. The entrance feature designed by Isaac Monte using 20 000 butterflies promises to be unforgettable. There will also be an auction of vintage design pieces on the last day.

At Art Rotterdam at the Van Nelle Fabriek, make sure to stop at GRIMM to see Xteriors XVI by Desiree Dolron, including a sneak preview of her new monograph designed by Irma Boom. The collaborative contemporary art practice formed by designers Eva Rucki, Conny Freyer and Sebastien Noel, TROIKA is also on show at Galerie Ron Mandos.

Besides the main exhibition, all of the city’s galleries and museums have unveiled new exhibitions for Art Rotterdam Week, and will be open late for Art Night XL on February 10. An opera created by artist Dominique Gonzalez-Forster specifically for Sonneveld House Museum will be performed live on the evening. One of the best-preserved examples of Dutch Functionalist style, the villa was designed in 1933 as a total concept in which architecture, interior and furnishings are perfectly coordinated and reinforce one another. Gonzalez-Forster’s opera is based on the Sonneveld family’s arrival in their new home, and the transition between traditional and modern.

Another exhibition pushing the boundaries between art and design is Arnout Meijer’s solo exhibition at Galerie VIVID. Featured in TLmagazine 26, Meijer’s installations explore optical and architectural perspectives and illusions created by light. Using light as a sculptural material, he contrasts the movement of light with the immobility of matter.
