Haus am Waldsee, one of the leading contemporary art venues in Germany, heralds its 70th anniversary with an exhibition of German ceramist Stefanie Hering. The exhibition presents development, production techniques and creative processes of the porcelain artist and entrepreneur of porcelain company Hering Berlin.

Stefanie Hering founded a ceramist studio in Berlin with Wiebke Lehmann in 1992. Seven years later, the studio grew into Hering Berlin brand in collaboration with Götz Esslinger. The studio approached porcelain from a contemporary perspective, and reduced forms and ornaments familiar to traditional tableware. Instead of producing classic tableware sets, Stefanie Hering reflects on altered eating habits of a globalised food culture.

Today, Hering Berlin produces tableware, drinking glasses, table textiles and lighting fixtures. The pieces are produced in collaboration with porcelain manufacturers Reichenbach in Thuringia, Germany. The brand is committed to high craftsmanship, and Stefanie Hering has become known as an ambassador of German craftsmanship.

Hering Berlin opened its flagship store at Waldorf Astoria in Berlin City West in 2013, and has showrooms in New York, Bologna, Austria, Istria and Taiwan. Stefanie Hering has been awarded with numerous design awards, such as the Gold Medal at the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale in Korea and the Red Dot Award. Hering’s designs also appear in several collections and museums.

The exhibition at Haus am Waldsee consists of Hering’s unique and mass-produced porcelain, but also recent pieces of glass design and lighting fixtures. •

The exhibition will feature a selection of large-scale ceramic sculptural ‘murals’ onto which she makes free-flowing abstract paintings inspired by the dramatic northern Norwegian landscapes and the mystery of life itself.
