Experimenting with the potential and intelligence of age-old materials, Krakow-based To Do Studio – comprised of architect Kasia Jabowska and industrial designer Tomasz Orzechowksi – breathes new life into ceramics and concrete. “Our aim is to develop projects for industry,” Jabowska explains, “At the moment, Polish industry needs design.” Working closely with technologists and producers in and around the same complex as their prototyping showroom, the duo looks to solve larger issues like pollution. Responding to Krakow’s pour air quality – induced by coal burning – the duo designed Caldo tiles, employing an electrically charge ceramic composite that maintains heat. Different size and colour variations all feature the same motif, reminiscent of old tile factories in the nearby Tatra mountains, but that are conducive to holding warmth. Jabowska and Orzechowksi are now experimenting with light concrete compounds to achieve the same characteristics.
