TLmag 33 Extended: New Age of Humanism

The path between BOZAR and Gooik leads to the Third Paradise, in a landscape that evokes the Primitive Dutch canvases.

Now a year into his third curatorial “season” at La Verrière Hermès, TLmag caught up with French curator Guillaume Désanges to discuss the influences behind their latest exhibition ‘Musa Nuit’ – leading to a conversation about challenging dominant social and political structures and art’s role within them.

Since late last year, TLmag and Formafantasma have been working together to create our latest Spring/Summer print-edition. A lot has changed between now and then, but one thing is sure: we are entering a new era of looking at and making for the world around us.

BOZAR Brussels collaborated with Tate Liverpool to create a retrospective exhibition dedicated to American artist Keith Haring. Keith Haring was a unique presence in 1980s New York, playing a key role in his generation’s underground counterculture and creating an immediately recognisable style.

Kati Laakso, Director of the Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux in Brussels, talks to TLmag about the Institute’s unique initiative, Together Alone, created after the spread of Covid-19 to support Finnish artists during the pandemic, and how she sees the artistic community changing in this new environment.

Using various textile techniques like knitting, embroidery and tufting, Paris-based textile artist Manon Daviet transposes her drawings into tapestries, creating what she calls “volume paintings”. Here, she talks TLmag through her multidisciplinary practice, finding inspiration in comic books and her embracing of mysticism in nature.

TLmag spoke to Taiwanese designer Chen Yi Fei about her work COVID-19 which explores the discussion around the appearance of the facemask.

Despite events being cancelled or postponed on a worldwide scale, and the precarious situation that many cultural institutions and designers have landed in because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have also seen a new urgency develop to create new ways of retaining solidarity and connection.
