TLmag39 Extended:The Culture of the Object

The Isamu Noguchi Museum in New York presents Toshiko Takaezu: Worlds Within, a major retrospective of the ground-breaking abstract artist (1922-2011) from Hawaii, most celebrated for her masterful “closed form” ceramic vessels.

For her first solo exhibition with Maria Wettergren Gallery, textile designer and artist Margrethe Odgaard presents “Dear Miaojin”, a series of work made in response to the epistolary book “Last Words from Montmartre,” by the Taiwanese artist Qiu Maiojin.

For TLmag39: The Culture of the Object, studio d-o-t-s explored what agrarian traditions can teach design, looking at the work of Emma Brushi and Fernando Laposse, both of whom are designing and making objects in collaboration with local farmers and crops.

For TLmag39: The Culture of the Object, Emanuele Quinz spoke with Marco Sammicheli, Curator and Director of Design at the Triennale de Milano, about design, the culture of the object and its relationship to the museum.

“I see my quest as building emotional connections with objects as a strategy for sustainability,” writes Mallorca-based artist Sylvia Sánchez Montoya. TLmag spoke to Montoya about her work, including her series titled Moiras and her recent performance and exhibition of this work in Colombia.

For TLmag39: The Culture of the Object, Adrian Madlener wrote about Alice Stori Liechtenstein’s curatorial vision for Schloss Hollenegg, the 12th century castle that she shares with her family in the Southern Austrian countryside, and which features an annual design exhibition and residency program. In 2023, she presented an exhibition on glass titled, “Ashes + Sand”. On May 4th, 2024, they will open “Wood Land”, an exhibition that will focus on the forest and its primary resource, wood.

TLmag spoke with Florence Louisy & Tarini Jindal Handa of Æquō, a collectible design gallery that connects designers with Indian craftspeople to create new work, as well as promote and preserve the extensive and incredible craftsmanship that is found throughout the country.

TLmag spoke with Humberto Campana ahead of his exhibition, “On the Road,” which opened at Friedman Benda on March 7th. This exhibition marks the first of a series of exhibitions and inaugurations recognizing the 40th year anniversary of Estudio Campana.

The Institut Giacometti in Paris presents “Envisagement”, a new exhibition that places the work of the artist and filmmaker Ali Cherri in dialogue with Alberto Giacometti. The exhibition is on view through March 24, 2024.

The Kunstraum Zug presents Specific Objects, an exhibition of pouring vessels by Aldo Bakker, which were originally presented within a larger exhibition at the Kunstmuseum The Hague, in 2022.
