A conversation between two landscape architects about plants, soil and the future of our cities. A special interview that first appeared in the A/W 2021 issue of TLmag36: All Is Landscape, guest curated by Bas Smets.

For the A/W 2020 TLmag34 – Precious: A Geology of Being, Tracy Lynn Chemaly reported on four innovative architectural firms using traditional clay bricks in pioneering architectural projects. Economical, environmentally stable, and aesthetically eye-catching, it’s time to put this material back in the spotlight.

The Mingei International Museum in San Diego, California, re-opened its doors to the public in September 2021 after an extensive 3-year renovation led by architect Jennifer Luce, principal of Luce et studio. With its dynamic, welcoming space & contemporary vision, the museum shines a light on the beauty of craft and the handmade.

In 2019, colour advisor Giulio Ridolfo visited the remote Fogo Island where he created a bespoke colour chart and a collection of knitted accessories for the new Fogo Island Workshop brand. Anniina Koivu, guest editor of TLmag35: Tactile / Textile / Texture, wrote about this experience for our S/S 2021 issue.

In this exciting collaboration, TLmag and co-curators Formafantasma explore the ‘New Age of Humanism‘ that is being perceived in different praxis of design, aiming to understand how — in such fraught political times and during urgent environmental crises — designers, makers, artists and thinkers can contribute to this new age of humanism, and more critically, put it into practice.

This extended edition of TLmag’s 32nd printed edition highlights the energy and daring of the designers who throw themselves body and soul into the challenge of hand and material.

If urban landscapes no longer move us, islands seem to us like an earthly paradise, perhaps lost in a flow of climate change. While nature is at risk, the human is still very much alive. That is what the artists, designers and photographers interviewed and invited into these extended pages of TLmags 31st print edition translate with their creations and in their simultaneously documentary, critical and poetic gaze, between the materiality of our planet and the fragility of the life that remains for us.

Here, TLmag highlights the most recent exhibitions and artists featured at our sister gallery Spazio Nobile.
